The vineyard (on a soil of sandstone and shale) sits atop a plateau between Rochefort sur Loire and Denée facing - on the other side of the Loire - Roche aux Moines and Coulée de Serrant. And this wine certainly bears comparison with its illustrious cousins. Clear, bright gold/straw in colour, with a very seductive nose – a mélange of lemon and lime, diesel and lanolin, with underlying notes of slate, straw, primrose and herbs. The palate is pretty much bone dry, with citrus and mineral flavours in abundance, a little reticent at first, but opening out to reveal richer, deeper flavours of honey, peach, Seville orange, spiced/baked apple and quince, with laser-like acidity and a finish that lingers for an age. Amazingly tight and well-delineated, yet truly elegant, this is wonderful to drink now, though it surely has a long life ahead of it. Dry Chenin at it very best, and an absolutely gorgeous wine.
