A deep, almost opaque colour, with a tiny rim. The nose is spectacular - soused/pickled black and red cherry and bramble, with notes of exotic spice, damp earth, leather and red meat. The palate also majors on black fruit rather than red, but with a hint of desiccated orange, along with peppery spice and all manner of herby and tertiary flavours. All of which are countered by fine, gently grippy tannins and the most wonderful streak of refreshing, raspberry-tinged volatile acidity. From 2 parcels of vines, planted in 1958 and 1965 in the shadow of La Madone, the fruit in this wine is of the very highest quality. Cru Beaujolais really does not get better than this - it is supremely elegant and utterly wonderful. |
