From old vines (of course), this wine is from the final pressing of the Morgon cuve - and hence the most concentrated juice, with a little more tannin. After fermentation, the wine spends 3 months in tank, followed by 1 year in used oak barrels (of one previous vintage - bought from a grower in Burgundy). As expected with a wine aged in barrel and with some bottle age, the colour is a little lighter than the standard Morgon - a more translucent core, with a little bricking and fading very gently to the rim. The nose offers complex aromas of little red fruits, forest floor and toasty oak, with subtle notes of mushroom and woodsmoke. On first sip, the oak and tannin is a little to the fore, though there is plenty of juicy Gamay fruit to keep it all in balance, which bodes well for the long haul (as this wine is undoubtedly designed for), with lots of sweet-sour cherry and cranberry fruit on the mid palate, leading to a long, tangy, dry finish. After a few hours, it really opens-out, to reveal myriad fruit and tertiary aromas and flavours, so decanting several hours ahead of drinking is recommended. A very classy and serious Cru Beaujolais, which will age and evolve nicely for at least another 5 years.
