A new flagship wine for the Archimbaud estate, with just 2 barrels (less than 600 bottles) produced. A blend of 30% Carignan (from 75 year-old vines), 30% Mourvedre, 30% Syrah, 10% Grenache, aged for 18 months in new 225L oak barriques. Deep red, semi-translucent colour, with a narrow rim. The nose is wonderful - masses of ripe red and black fruit aromas, combined with notes of damp earth, tobacco, fine eau de vie and exotic spices. The palate is - if anything - even more wonderful, offering all of the above and more.... rich, ripe, but balanced bramble, cassis and orange fruit flavours, with spice and herb nuances, uber-smooth, Lapsang tea-like tannins and utterly mouth-watering soft-citrus and cherry-skin acidity. There's a savage earthiness to both the nose and palate - but fruity rather than meaty/umami - that lifts this wine to another level. Just the slightest hint of mint (where that comes from I don't know) hints at fine Barossa Shiraz, whilst the freshness and grip hints at Hermitage - but with the warmth of the deep south of France. And it finishes fruity, spicy/herby, citrussy and long. It's not a bruiser, but it's no shrinking violet either. In fact, it's just right. What an utterly lovely wine! At over £50, this is comfortably the most expensive wine we have ever offered - but it really is a stunner. Is it worth the price tag? You decide - but you won't be disappointed! A very special wine indeed.
