This is a brand new cuvée from Cébène - a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan from north and east facing terraces of the highest vineyards in the Faugères appellation, plus Mourvèdre from slopes facing south, towards the full sun. Medium cherry red colour, bright, almost translucent. On opening (for the purposes of this tasting note, less than 2 weeks after bottling) the nose is quite herby, savoury, slightly meaty, but with plenty of bright, fresh red and black berry fruit aromas, along with subtle notes of leather, wood smoke and damp earth. The palate is relatively fresh and light, but with plenty of depth and interest - sweet-sour red and black fruit flavours, infused with herbs of the garrigue and a hint of saline minerality. The tannins are really quite fine, whilst offering plenty of grip, with ample soft citrus acidity keeping it all together. The finish is long. On day 2, it exhibits more overtly fruity aromas, with hints of fine herbs, damp earth and eau de vie. The palate also shows even more freshness, somehow lighter and more elegant, with the acidity and tannin being more to the fore, making for a beautifully balanced and focused wine. After a few months in bottle, this should be a cracker - a sort of "mini" Les Bancels, for earlier drinking. Lovely!
