This is the second vintage of this cuvée - a sort of junior "sibling" to Les Bancels, designed for earlier drinking, which winemaker Brigitte Chevalier describes as a "bistro wine". It is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan from north and east facing terraces of the highest vineyards in the Faugères appellation, plus Mourvèdre from slopes facing south, towards the full sun. Medium cherry red colour, bright, almost translucent. The nose is quite herby, savoury, floral, with plenty of bright, fresh red and black berry fruit aromas, along with subtle notes of leather and damp earth. The palate is relatively fresh and light, but with plenty of depth and interest - sweet-sour red and black fruit flavours, infused with herbs of the garrigue and a hint of saline minerality. The tannins are really quite fine, whilst offering plenty of grip, with ample soft citrus acidity keeping it all together. The finish is long. On day 2, it exhibits more overtly fruity aromas, with hints of fine herbs, damp earth and eau de vie. The palate also shows even more freshness, somehow lighter and more elegant, with the acidity and tannin being more to the fore, making for a beautifully balanced and focused wine. In many ways, it is more elegant and lighter on its feet than Les Bancels, and certainly (in my opinion) more than just a bistro wine!
