This is made predominantly from ancient, gnarly, north-facing Carignan vines grown on schist soils surrounding the Cébène winery, situated on a hill over 300 metres above sea level. Whole bunch fermentation and a complete lack of oak influence is the order of the day here. It simply reeks of garrigue herbs, schist soil minerality and a whole bucketful of red and black berry and currant fruits, with further notes of soft citrus, polished leather, curry spices, blackcurrant leaf and damp earth. The palate offers plenty of concentration, whilst at the same time exhibiting an array of delicate, high-toned red/black fruit and garrigue herb flavours. The tannins are gently grippy but very fine and meld beautifully with the mix of succulent sweet-sour fruit flavours. Subtle hints of spice and cool mint add yet more elegance and complexity, and the finish is long and keeps you coming back for more. At such a relatively young age (2 years, at the time of tasting) this is such a lovely wine to drink now, yet definitely has the structure to age for a number of years. Another triumph of a wine from Brigitte Chevalier and yet another reason to love old-vine Carignan!
