Grenache grown on Villafranchien soil (a mix of red clay and smooth pebbles), plus a little Mourvedre, grown on a 40-metre-deep bed of sea sediment and alluvial deposits in Corneilhan, just north of Béziers. Yields are very low, with just 20 hl/ha for the Grenache and a miniscule 10 hl/ha for the Mourvedre. In many ways, this is the most elegant of Brigitte Chevalier's wines - what it lacks in Faugères typicity/terroir, it certainly makes up for it in it's delightfully soft, sweet-sour, slightly saline fruit aromas and flavours. And this new 2019 vintage is perhaps the best yet. As always, it offers myriad redcurrant, raspberry and white tree fruit aromas, along with further notes of new leather, smoke, dried orange peel, garrigue herbs and smoking incense. But this one seems to possess even more depth, complexity and elegance than ever, with hints of soused bramble, roasted red meat, damp undergrowth, curry spices (notably cumin and fenugreek) and a welcome lick of volatile acidity. The palate is medium-to-full bodied, with all manner of piquant red, black and soft citrus fruit flavours, subtle herb and exotic spice nuances, fine tannins and utterly mouth-watering and refreshing cherry skin acidity. And whilst very young, it is drinking beautifully already. That said - and as with all of Brigitte's wines - it will undoubtedly age and evolve for a good few years yet. Brigitte Chevalier is fast emerging as one of Languedoc's greatest winemakers, and this is yet another fantastic wine to add to her growing list of successes.
