Even for Languedoc, this is a somewhat unusual blend, from vines in excess of 55 years old. And what a stunning colour for a red wine! The hue is a medium-dark cherry/brick red, yet really bright, almost shiny, and completely translucent throughout, with a tiny watery rim. The nose is wonderfully fresh, offering aromas of cherry blossom, red berry/currant and mandarin orange, along with subtle hints of rose, garam masala, forest floor and woodsmoke. The palate is equally compelling, with cherry, redcurrant, raspberry and rhubarb flavours (trust me, they are all in there), soft spice and a hint of cream, all wrapped around a core of fine, melting tannins and mouth-watering acidity. All of which combined makes for a lush, yet delicate, almost ethereal, sweet-sour style of wine that knocks spots off of many a top Cru Beaujolais or a decent Village Burgundy at twice the price. Quite simply, a bargain! |
