Those who are familiar with Domaine Treloar's wines will know that the first (and until now only) vintage of MO2 was made in 2009. It was originally meant to be a dry Muscat, but - due to a cooling problem in the winery - the must became oxidised, thus rendering it unsuitable for making a table wine. So winemaker Jonathan Hesford decided to continue with the fermentation and make a fortified dry wine - something pretty unusual, if not unique, in Roussillon. And it turned out very well indeed - bone dry, but full of complexity and interest. Fast forward to 2013 and Jon decided to have another go - but this time, on purpose. And the result is somewhat different...... but equally interesting, if not more so. This one isn't *quite* bone dry, as we definitely have a few (but only a few) grams of residual sugar. That said, it has masses of interest and quirkiness - not to mention genuine complexity - with aromas and flavours of dried oranges and herbs, nuts, polished wood, eau de vie and all manner of vinous (i.e. non-fruit) nuances and earthiness - and a long, long finish that manages to be warming and cool/minty at the same time. As for what to pair it with..... well, I guess there are numerous possibilities! But is sure is good to drink on its own. An enigmatic wine, which everyone should taste at least once - if not more. A fabulous bargain!
