Domaine Treloar Motus 2019 Côtes du Roussillon

From tiny yields of just 18 hl/ha, aged for 12 months in oak barrels (20% of which are new). A dark, semi-opaque purple robe, leading to a tiny, deep red rim. The nose is just wonderful - squished bramble, blackcurrant and black cherry aromas leap from the glass, with further notes of polished old leather, woodsmoke, balsam, iodine, herbs, curry spices and fine eau de vie. The palate offers masses of ripe red and black berry and currant flavours and a hint of soft citrus, with beautifully ripe, tea-like tannins, wonderfully mouth-watering acidity and a lick of very fine oak. At 4 years of age (at the time of writing - December 2023) and despite the fact that the tannins perhaps need a year or two to really integrate - youth is no bar to the sheer loveliness and approachability of this wine. That said, we tasted a bottle over 3 days, and it was actually showing its best on day 3, meaning that this wine - although very approachable now - is just going to get better and better, over the next 5 to 8 years, peaking in around 2030. Think of a top Bandol, but with more acidity, a touch softer and less forbidding at this stage..... and a lot cheaper! The best and most complete Motus yet? We think so.
