A blend of 25% Syrah, 25% Marselan and 50% Merlot. It may seem like an unusual blend, but Marselan (a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache Noir) is an increasingly popular grape in Languedoc, whilst this particular grower has been producing really excellent Merlot-based wines for many years. The inclusion of Syrah, though, is a bit of a master stroke, adding a welcome streak of tangy, soused bramble and red cherry fruit to the soft, plummy/blackcurranty Marselan/Merlot base. The nose is so appealing, with myriad red and black fruit flavours leaping from the glass, accompanied by notes of white pepper, new leather, damp earth and garrigue herbs. The palate is relatively rich, yet beautifully fresh and full of vibrant fruit flavours, wrapped around a core of rustic but ripe tannins and juicy, cherry skin acidity. With a long, tangy, spicy, relatively dry finish, this wine should appeal to lovers of both Claret and Rhone.
