This is, if anything, more high-toned and acidic than the Sommieres 2013 - at least to begin with. It has a similar profile on the nose - red and black summer fruit aromas, herbs, spice and eau de vie, win hints of flowers and polished leather. On the palate, it is again extremely fresh, vibrant and full of summer fruit flavours, but with the tannins less prominent and the acidity more to the fore. And it really does come together beautifully, an hour or two after opening - the fruit is still fresh, whilst the acidity and tannins meld together and the wine as a whole becomes softer and much more approachable, with a delightfully long, tangy, sweet-sour-dry finish. Some say red wine ages on its tannins, some say it ages on its acidity. Well, this has both - and bags of fruit too - so I can see this ageing and evolving nicely for another 5 to 8 years. Drink the Sommieres now, or over the next 5 years, and maybe give this a year or two to reach its stride. Another quintessential Languedoc red.
