100 percent Chardonnay, grown on granite/clay-based soil in the hillsides around Beaujeu, 10 kilometres to the east of Villié-Morgon. This was the first wine we tasted on our 2021 visit - and even though it was 9.15 in the morning, it hit the spot immediately! A bright, medium straw/gold colour, with surprisingly complex aromas including honey, flowers, lime oil, orange peel, spiced apple pie and oregano, with a suggestion of wet stone minerality. The palate is equally complex, yet refreshing, with a gently oily, medium/rich texture. Mouth-filling, but with a touch of zestiness, a hint of spice, mouth-watering acidity and a long, tangy finish. A match for the pricier wines of the nearby Maconnais and Côtes Chalonnaise regions of Burgundy and great value for money. |
