This is basically the same wine as the Tradition cuvée (though obviously from a year earlier), but aged in used (1 year old) barrels for 7 months. And this makes for a really quite different wine: gutsy and quite firm, with definite ageing potential. Semi-opaque blood red, with amber/brick hints, fading to a tiny rim. There's a good deal of red and black cherry and bramble fruit aromas lurking in there, currently wrapped in a soft cloak of toasty oak, with background notes of damp earth, burning incense and toasted curry spice - it certainly doesn't lack complexity. The palate is similarly packed with sweet-sour red and black fruit flavours, with a hint of Christmas cake richness, along with pronounced orange peel and spice notes. The tannins are firm, but there's plenty of juicy acidity to keep it all in balance. Mr. Rampon says he enjoys this wine in its relative youth, but for me it would benefit for another year or two of cellaring. A serious wine.
