From the highest vineyards in Faugères (320m) and grown on schist soil, with yields of just 20 hl/ha. Like the 2016, this is a delightfully perfumed and considerably complex wine - almost sweet-smelling, with bramble, raspberry and redcurrant fruit aromas in abundance, with further notes of new leather, curry spices, blackcurrant leaf and dried orange peel. The palate is again quite rich and expansive, though slightly less dense - and hence, perhaps more elegant - than the 2016. Again, we have bags of spiced red and black fruit flavours, with myriad savoury/herby notes, beautifully ripe tannins and plenty of juicy acidity. On day 2, it is still in fine fettle, though perhaps a little of its initial day 1 freshness and vitality has faded, suggesting that this vintage should be drunk over the next 5 or 6 years, whilst the 2016 could be laid down for a few years more. Either way, this is still a beautiful wine, to be drunk young, or to lay down for a few more years. Organic. |
