Rosé made from 100% Mourvedre is unusual in Languedoc/Roussillon - it's traditional home is in Bandol, at the opposite end of the French Mediterranean coast. And this is indeed a completely different animal from the pale (albeit interesting) Bandol style. As you can see from the bottle image, it is quite a deep colour for a rosé - sort of a shocking pink, with brick/orange/onion skin hues and a narrow watery rim. But don't be shocked or frightened - for it really is delicious! The nose offers a mélange of soft, ripe red and white fruit aromas, with some herby, savoury, even meaty notes lurking in the background. The palate is really quite luscious, almost creamy, and crammed full of sweet-sour raspberry, redcurrant and peach flavours. Again, it offers subtle herby/savoury nuances, the merest hint of grape skin tannin, lashings of soft citrus acidity and a lick of peppery spice on the finish. In truth, it is quite atypical (even when compared with other rosés made by direct pressing of the grapes - which this clearly is) and reminds me more of the rosés made in the Loire Valley or Beaujolais. And trust me - as a fan of those sort of wines, that is one of the highest compliments I can give. It's just lovely!
